There are more than 300 types of bananas in the world, yet most
bananas that make their way to the U.S. and European markets are
the Gran Cavendish variety. This type of banana is raised for its
portability, rather than for taste. Our organic Gros Michel banana,
on the other hand, is cultivated for its sweet taste. The Gros Michel
is the banana that our grandparents knew from the early 1920’s,
until it was virtually wiped out by a fungal disease in the 1950’s
and then abandoned by large-scale growers.
In
addition to organic bananas, we also produce other organic fruits
and vegetables including noni, plantains, oranges, yucca, araza, cocoa
and pineapple. Noni is currently being sold to SOMANONI
and others of our fruits are on the national market through Oro
Verde.

ACAPRO now proudly produces organic Noni del Caribe Juice...
Try it!
Noni
(morinda citrifolia) is a tropical fruit that is native to India
and belongs to the Rubiaceae family. The plant can reach up to six
meters tall and live more than 80 years. It's known as a fruit of
the South Pacific, but is actually found extensively in all tropical
coastal areas. The climate and soil conditions in the Caribbean
are ideal for producing high-quality noni fruit.
Many cultures have considered noni to be a sacred fruit. Healers
and shamans have used this fruit in rituals and therapeutic practices
for thousands of years. In the West, scientists began to study noni
at the end of the 19th century, when interest in tropical botany
peaked in Europe. However, the appearance of antibiotics quickly
eclipsed interest in noni and other medicinal plants.
Interest was renewed after World War II, when American
soldiers stationed in the South Pacific islands were exposed to
its health benefits, and new studies began. In the 1990's distribution
of noni began on a massive worldwide scale, and finally in 2003
Europe admitted its use as a nutritional ingredient.
